Linux or Windows Server, which is best?

With over 15 years of experience in webhosting we can clearly say that we have a preference for Linux servers and our server population is currently 5 Linux servers to each Windows server.

Linux is an 'Open Source' Operating System (OS) and as such it does not incurr any licensing fees (Windows serversĀ  involve the payement of substantial licensing fees to Microsoft). A Linux server costs less than a similarly spec'd Windows server.

Both Linux and Windows servers are reliable with the Linux servers requiring fewer updates and are far easier to manage.

Some web designers will insist on a Windows server by claiming that there are things that a Linux server can't do. This is not true in the real world where Linux servers handle a huge variety of webpage types.

The facts are more websites are hosted on Linux servers, even Miscrosoft uses some Linux servers for its own websites! (see http://searchdns.netcraft.com/?host=microsoft.com&x=0&y=0)
